Poland passport and ID card photos

For a Polish identity card or passport, the photo is 35 × 45 mm. The basic portrait rules are similar, but online file rules differ by document and age.[1][2][3]

Documents covered

The tool above covers the Polish ID card photo (35×45 mm), called “Zdjęcie do dowodu osobistego.” This size also matches the paper photo size for a Polish passport.[1][2]

Polish identity card and passport photos share rules such as a light background and a straight-on view. The online options differ: the ID card has a digital-photo route, while the passport online route described by Gov.pl is for children under 12.[2]

Photo size and online files

For a Polish ID card, attach a color photo measuring 35 × 45 mm if you apply in person. For an online application, the image must be at least 492 × 633 pixels, no larger than 2.5 MB, and keep the same 35 × 45 mm proportions.[2][3]

For a passport application in person, submit a color photo on photographic paper, 35 × 45 mm. For an online passport application for a child under 12, the file must be at least 768 × 1004 pixels, no larger than 2.5 MB, and keep the 35 × 45 mm proportions.[2]

If you use the tool above, choose the document you need, then check whether you will submit a digital file or a printed photo. Do not assume that an ID card file’s pixel size meets the passport’s minimum.

Pose, background, and expression

For the ID card, the photo must have a uniform light background, even lighting, good sharpness, and natural skin color. It must show your head from the top to the upper shoulders, with your face taking up 70–80% of the photo; face the camera with your head upright.[1][2]

Look straight ahead with a natural expression and closed mouth. Keep your hair from covering your face, eyebrows, eyes, or pupils. These rules help avoid a photo where your face is hard to recognize.[1][2]

Glasses, head coverings, and children

Do not wear glasses with dark lenses unless you provide the required disability certificate for a visual impairment. A head covering is allowed for religious reasons if your face is fully visible and you provide the required certificate from a registered religious community. It may also be allowed after treatment or an accident if you show the need.[1][2]

A child’s photo for an ID card may differ from the usual expression rules if the child is under 5. Gov.pl also says children under 5 may have closed eyes, an open mouth, or an unusual expression; keep the child’s face clear and use a light, even background.[1][2]

Taking and printing your photo

For a simple home setup, stand in front of a plain, light wall and face a window for soft light. Ask someone else to take the picture, with the camera at eye level and about 1–1.5 m away. Keep your shoulders square and leave space around your head so the crop does not cut off your hair or chin.

If you apply in person, submit a color photo on photographic paper measuring 35 × 45 mm. For an online application, upload the required image file.[2][3]

Check before you apply

The photo must be recent: take it no earlier than six months before you submit the ID card application. The photo rules do not set a separate exact pixel size for a printed photo; the minimum pixel dimensions apply to online ID card and passport files.[1][2][3]

Review the final crop at full size. Watch for blur, uneven light, a dark or patterned background, a tilted head, hair over the face, or an expression that does not match the rules. The office decides whether your photo meets the requirements.[1][2]
