Check a photo for the Diversity Visa entry

The DV photo checker looks at the image file’s format, size, and shape. It helps you spot those file problems before you submit your entry, but it cannot decide whether the photo meets every State Department photo rule.

What the checker looks for

For a DV entry, the digital image must be a JPEG file, 600 × 600 pixels, square, and no larger than 240 KB. The checker looks for those four file requirements.[1]

A file can pass these checks and still have a photo problem. The image also needs the right background, framing, focus, expression, and other details. The State Department decides whether a photo meets its rules.[1]

How to use the tool

1. Choose a recent photo of the person named on the DV entry. The photo must have been taken within the last six months.[1]

2. Open the tool above and select the photo file on your device. Follow the on-screen steps to check it. The tool checks the file itself; it does not submit your DV entry.

3. Read the result. If the tool reports a problem with the file’s dimensions, shape, format, or size, choose another image or make a corrected file and check it again.

4. Review the photo by eye against the official photo rules. Then upload the digital image as part of your entry on the official DV entry site.[1]

What the result tells you

A passing result means the file matches the dimensions, square shape, JPEG format, and file size that the tool checks. It does not confirm that your face is the right size in the frame, that the background is plain, or that the image is in focus.

It also cannot tell whether the image was taken recently, whether it has been manipulated, or whether it is the same photo you used for an earlier year’s entry. Those details matter under the DV photo instructions.[1]

Check the photo itself

Use a color photo in focus, taken straight on with a neutral expression and both eyes open. The background must be plain white or off-white. Your head must measure 1 to 1⅜ inches (22 to 35 mm), or 50 to 69 percent of the image height, from chin to top of head.[1]

Do not wear glasses, a uniform, or headphones. A head covering is allowed when worn daily for a religious purpose; your full face must show, and it must not cast a shadow on your face. Daily religious clothing is allowed.[1]

For a clearer photo, face a window or other soft light. Ask someone to take the picture at eye level, about 1 to 1.5 metres away. Keep your face centered and leave space around your head so you can check the framing.

Limits to keep in mind

The checker does not measure head height or assess expression, shadows, clothing, or other composition rules. It cannot verify the photo’s age or use history, and it cannot guarantee acceptance. The State Department says a photo that misses its specifications or has been manipulated may make you ineligible.[1]

Use a new photo for each DV year. The State Department says submitting the same photograph from a prior year’s entry will make you ineligible.[1]
