Spanish DNI photo: size, rules and how to prepare

For a Spanish DNI application or renewal, you need a recent colour photo measuring 26 × 32 mm. It must have a plain white background and show your face from the front. Some documentation units can take the photo automatically.[1]

Which Spanish document this page covers

The tool above covers the Spanish DNI photo (26×32 mm), also called “Fotografía del DNI.” This is the only Spanish document listed here. The official rule says you need a recent colour photo of your face for a first DNI and for a renewal.[1]

The photo must measure 32 × 26 mm.[1] The authority does not set a head-height measurement, eye position, top margin, pixel size or digital file-size limit for this photo.

What the photo must show

Use a recent colour photo with a uniform, plain white background. Face the camera straight on, with your head fully uncovered. Do not wear dark glasses or anything else that could prevent or make it harder to identify you.[1]

The DNI photo rule does not give a head-height measurement or a separate rule for expression. The facts block allows a neutral expression or natural smile. Keep your face clearly visible and avoid shadows, glare or objects that cover it as practical photo advice.[1]

Glasses and head coverings

If you wear vision glasses, they must leave your eyes visible. Dark glasses are allowed only for people who are blind or have a serious, lasting vision impairment and usually wear them.[2]

A head covering is allowed only for religious or medical reasons, and your face must remain fully visible.[2] If you have a medical reason to keep glasses or cover your head, check the official conditions before you take the photo.

Prepare a clean print

The photo is normally provided as a print. Some documentation units can take it automatically, so check whether that option is available at your appointment.[1] The tool above can crop an image to the listed DNI size and make a sheet for printing as a standard 4×6-inch photo. If you print the sheet, use its actual size, then cut the DNI photo to 26 × 32 mm.

For a new photo, stand in even light against a plain white wall. Ask someone to take it from about 1–1.5 m away, with the camera at eye level. Keep your head straight and shoulders relaxed. These are practical tips, not additional official requirements.

Check it before your appointment

Measure the cut print: it should be 26 mm wide and 32 mm high. Check that it is in colour, recent and taken from the front, with a plain white background.[1] Keep your face visible and avoid shadows as a practical photo tip.

Bring the print for the in-person DNI process. The decree says the procedure takes place with the applicant physically present, through the appointment system, with exceptional cases possible without an appointment.[1] The issuing authority decides whether a photo is suitable.
