Crop a passport photo to the right size
A passport photo can look fine on your phone and still fail because the printed size, head size, or framing is wrong. This tool crops your photo to a document size and head height, levels the eyes, and shows measured checks so you can review the result.
What the cropper does
Choose the document or photo format you need, then add a picture from your device. The tool finds the face, levels the eyes, and places a crop guide around the head. You can see the selected photo size and head height before you make a print sheet.
The cropper works with the picture you provide; it cannot change how you looked when the photo was taken. The tool above makes a sheet for an ordinary 4×6-inch photo print, with the cropped photos arranged for printing. Check your authority’s rules before using an edited crop: U.S. passport applications require an original, unedited photo, and UK printed photos must not be altered by computer software.[1][2]
Take a clear starting photo
Stand in front of a plain, light wall and face a window or other soft light. Ask someone to take the picture, or set the camera at eye level and step back so your face is not distorted. Keep your head straight, look at the lens, and leave space around your head and shoulders.
Check the original before cropping. Make sure the full head is visible, both eyes can be seen, the image is sharp, and no person or object is behind you. A crop cannot fix blur, strong shadows, a busy background, or a face turned away from the camera.
Use the tool step by step
First, select the country or document format that matches your application. Requirements differ: a U.S. passport photo is 2×2 inches, with the head from chin to top measuring 1 to 1⅜ inches; a UK printed passport photo is 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, with the head from crown to chin measuring 29 to 34 mm.[1][2]
Next, upload your photo and check the face guide. Adjust the crop if needed so the whole head fits and the eyes appear level. Review the displayed measurements, then create the print sheet and save it. Before printing, check that your chosen document and measurements match the current instructions for your application.
Check the print and application rules
A 4×6-inch sheet can hold photos at the chosen size, but printing it does not make a photo suitable for every application. UK printed photos must be 45 mm high by 35 mm wide and must not be cut down from a larger picture or altered by computer software.[2] Check your authority’s current rules before printing, and make sure the print is the required size.
Check how your authority wants you to submit the photo. For example, a UK paper passport application needs two identical printed photos, while a UK online passport application needs a digital photo.[2] U.S. passport applications using a paper form need one color photo taken in the last six months; online renewal uses a digital photo.[1]
Know what the checks cannot tell you
Measured crop checks cover the frame and dimensions. They cannot judge every detail that an application office may inspect, such as whether your expression, lighting, background, or clothing follows its rules. They also cannot confirm that a printer kept the sheet at its real size. The tool cannot confirm that an authority will accept the image; for example, U.S. rules require an original, unedited photo, and UK rules say printed photos must not be altered by computer software.[1][2]
For example, U.S. passport photos need a plain white or off-white background, a direct pose, open and visible eyes, and a closed mouth; glasses must be removed.[1] UK printed passport photos need a plain cream or light grey background, a forward-facing pose, visible eyes, and no shadows on the face or behind the person.[2] Read the authority’s full instructions, especially for children or special cases.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this for a U.S. passport photo?
Choose the U.S. passport format and check the final print: it must measure 2×2 inches, and the head must measure 1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to top.[1]
Can I use it for a UK passport photo?
Choose the UK format and verify that the printed photo is 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, with a crown-to-chin head height of 29 to 34 mm.[2]
Does the cropper make my photo official?
No. It helps set the crop and measurements, but the authority reviews the photo and decides whether it meets its rules.
