Preparing Your UK Immigration and Visa Photos
GOV.UK no longer issues BRPs. This article explains current UKVI guidance for digital photos used in visa or permission applications.
Understanding UK Immigration Photo Rules
BRPs have been replaced by eVisas[1]. UKVI’s current photo guidance covers digital photos for visa applications or permissions[2]. It does not set a 35×45 mm print size; that is a common practice crop, not an official BRP photo requirement.
For a digital UKVI photo, the file must be a JPG or JPEG, at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, between 50 KB and 6 MB, and vertically oriented[2]. Follow the instructions for your application route.
Taking the Photo at Home
Use a plain light-coloured background that contrasts clearly with you[2]. GOV.UK does not specify an exact colour.
You can use a phone or tablet to take the photo. UKVI recommends asking another person to take it[2].
Head Size and Position Requirements
UKVI’s digital photo guidance does not set a head-height measurement. Face the camera and look straight at it[2].
The photo must show your head, shoulders and upper body[2].
Background and Lighting Setup
For digital visa application or permission photos, GOV.UK requires a plain light-coloured background that contrasts clearly with you[2]. It does not specify an exact colour.
Take the photo in a well-lit room and make sure there are no shadows on your face or behind you[2].
Facial Expression, Eyes, and Glasses
Have a plain expression, keep your mouth closed, and keep your eyes open and visible[2].
Do not wear glasses unless you have to. If you do, they cannot be sunglasses or tinted glasses, and your eyes must be clearly visible without frames, glare, reflections or shadows[2].
Head Coverings and Religious Exceptions
You may wear a head covering for religious or medical reasons, but your face must remain visible[2].
Make sure there are no shadows on your face or behind you[2].
Rules for Infants and Children
Children under 6 do not have to look directly at the camera or have a plain expression[2]. Children must be alone in the picture[2].
Children under 1 do not have to have their eyes open. You may support their head with your hand, but the hand must not be visible. The child must be alone and must not hold toys[2]. The child should lie on a plain light-coloured sheet, and you should take the photo from above[2].
Checking Your Photo
Before you send your picture, look closely at the details. Check that the file format is a JPG or JPEG. Verify the file size falls between 50 KB and 6144 KB[2].
Check that the photo is clear and in focus, your eyes are open and visible, and there are no shadows on your face or behind you[2].
Preparing Your Digital File and Submission
For digital visa or permission applications, the photo must be between 50 KB and 6 MB[2].
Check that your file is a JPG or JPEG, is at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, and is vertically oriented[2].
