Official biometric specifications for national civil identity cards, citizen credentials, and EU ID cards.
EU Regulation 2019/1157 standardizes European national identity cards (such as the Polish Dowód Osobisty, German Personalausweis, and French CNI). ID photos must be 35×45 mm with high biometric contrast and 70–80% head coverage, ensuring seamless interoperability with border e-gates.
National identity card portraits require 24-bit sRGB color depth, sharp edge definition, and accurate skin tone reproduction. The subject's face must be centered horizontally and vertically, with eye centers positioned between 28 mm and 35 mm from the bottom edge of the print.
To capture an approved national ID photo at home, stand 1.5 to 2 meters away from a plain wall facing a natural light source. Position the smartphone lens at eye level to eliminate perspective distortion.
